Notably, the number of shale-related patent applications in the oil & gas industry was 435 in Q1 2024, versus 478 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 41% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that China National Petroleum filed the most shale patents within the oil & gas industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 69 shale-related patents in the quarter, compared with 64 in the previous quarter. It was followed by China Petrochemical with 45 shale patent filings, Fuji Oil (22 filings), and China University of Petroleum (22 filings) in Q1 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 46% share of total patent filings
The largest share of shale related patent filings in the oil & gas industry in Q1 2024 was in China with 46%, followed by the US (20%) and the UK (4%). The share represented by China was 8% lower than the 54% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
